English translation of the football/soccer tag
Linked entities: /tag/サッカー
This Japanese tag refers to the sport of association football, or soccer as it is known in the US and Australia. I asked what the better translation for it in English would be on the discord and I was told to make a discussion about it to open it up for the people using the site.
The soccer tag as is right now is completely different, referring to ytpmv soccer, as was pointed out in the discord, which probably should be changed. Furthermore, the football tag has no videos, having been deprecated at some stage. As far as I can see, there are no tags to refer to the sport of american football, although some tags such as justin jefferson's griddy could be stored under it if it were to exist.
So I'm opening this discussion to see what kind of consensus can be reached. For instance, the wikipedia article for football refers to football as the overarching family of sports containing both association football and american football.
In my opinion, both "soccer" and "football" should both be aliased to サッカー (from now on, association football) and other sports that could conflict with it could use their full name instead. Technically, "football" is an ambiguous term, even in North America (American football vs. Canadian football, but I feel like that internationally, these variants are specified by their full name (except for rugby, which is also technically called "rugby union football"). Additionally, association football is the most popular variant of football, so it probably deserves the shortening.
If aliasing "football" to association football is counter-intuitive, another solution is just to enforce the full name of the sports that use the word "football" and avoid having one football tag. This way, typing "football" into the tag entry bar should return results for every kind of football instead of suggesting that one variant is the true football.
However, is such a tag needed at the moment? I know some association football players have been sampled before but I am not sure if there are enough works to warrant one collective tag for the sport, or any sport. Also, it could be argued that the works focus more on the players rather than the sport itself (example), so maybe a collective tag for athletes could be introduced similar to actors and political figures. Someone can correct me on the number of sport-related/athlete-related works.
