A departure from form, in the form of a tribute
Coming off a "it's been too long" rewatch, I wanted to try a more down-to-earth, straight-faced approach to a film that's always meant a lot to me; something that could work as a tribute without losing sight of the medium itself. It was also a test to see whether a solid arrangement and structure could hold up without relying on humor as a crutch (apart from a small closing joke), leaning instead into manual source selection by ear. That way, the No BGM version can stand on its own, too
There was also plenty of room to let the source material breathe on its own terms, so applying the usual techniques in a more somber atmosphere turns what started as a simple instrumental cover into something that follows the film's progression more closely. To make it loop more or less seamlessly, it ends as abruptly as it begins, letting the cycle restart immediately. Rather than playing things for a joke, I focus on the feeling WALL-E left with me, and carry some of that sincerity through the tools I have... |
