The Spelunker Technique is a colloquial term given to works that match pitch without using pitch shifting, instead, cutting and pasting together portions of the source material that correspond to different notes on the scale.
The first known use of this technique was in /work/11434. At this point, it had not yet taken on the form it's commonly seen as. Later, /work/5845 was posted, and is the first occurrence of what would be seen as the Spelunker Technique.
Several videos using this technique were posted in the time that followed, but the method itself never attracted major attention.
However, on March 22, 2010, a work titled Spelunker, taken directly from the game of the same name, was posted during the 20th Otomad Exposure Event, firmly establishing the technique's presence. This is when the term Spelunker Technique was formerly given.
Because the Tartar Technique was already widely known and established a naming convention of "X Technique", the name was applied retroactively to both past and present works -- making this essentially a case of retronyming.
