The Tartar Technique is a colloquial term given to works with these characteristics:
- No pitch shifting used
- Samples cut at any point (as opposed to forming recognizable words)
- Heavy use of time stretching and reverse playback
- Fine rests ranging from 16th notes to 64th notes inserted
The name of the technique originated from /work/10881, though the first exact instance of this technique using the relevant source material was in /work/10753, both by by Shin Donald P.
The name originates from "Dattan Kaikyou" (韃靼海峡 / "Tartar Strait"), a 2009 single by enka singer Ichiro Toba. Due to the aforementioned videos, Toba exploded in popularity as source material, and the name Tartar Technique, inheriting 韃靼 ("Tartar") from the song title, was established for videos created in this style. This also established the general "X Technique" naming convention in the community; later techniques, such as the Spelunker Technique, were named to follow this pattern.
